What is Smart Serve?
Smart Serve (or SmartServe Ontario) was created with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) in 1995 to provide a responsible alcohol beverage service training program for the Ontario hospitality industry.
Who needs Smart Serve certification?
Smart Serve is now required by anyone who serves or handles alcohol, as well as managers and security staff in Ontario. Since the early 2000s, all staff, managers, licensees and security are required to be certified and carry their Smart Serve card while working.

Where is it valid?
It is an Ontario program so it’s only valid in Ontario. Other provinces have their own programs but the aim of the programs is similar: to teach staff how to responsibility serve alcohol to the public.
I have a serving licence from outside Ontario, can I use that instead?
No, Smart Serve is the only program approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).
How old do you have to be to take the Smart Serve test?
There is no age limit, however you must be 18 years to serve alcohol in Ontario
Do Smart Serve certificates expire?
No they do not currently. However, audits can be done, usually a few weeks after you’ve taken the test. There is also a recertification test you can take if you want to upgrade your skills.
How long do I have to get my Smart Serve after being hired?
You need to have it within a maximum of 60 days of starting, however owners can ask for it sooner.
How much does Smart Serve certification cost?
$75.00 plus HST (workbook included)
What’s the passing mark on the Test?
You need to get 80% on the quiz and test.
If I’ve lost my SmartServe card, how much is it to replace?
The cost is currently $10. You can order a replacement at: www.smartserve.ca/replacement-cards
